Brown’s is an air conditioning contractor servicing residential and small commercial businesses. We pride ourselves having technicians that are well trained, polite, and prompt. In order to ensure we provide you with the best services, we take time to properly train and evaluate our team because we know how important air conditioning is to your comfort and health. The HVAC system is THE workhorse providing a comfortable living or working space in your home or office. Therefore, we can agree that the main task of your air conditioning system is to keep you cool and comfortable during the hot and humid season: from late spring, throughout the summer and sometimes into early fall.
How DOES It Work?
There are three main components to your cooling system: the outdoor unit called the condenser, the indoor evaporator coil, and the unit dispersing the conditioned air; either a furnace or air handler. So let’s start with the condenser unit. It consists of the outdoor condenser coil, condenser fan/fan motor, and compressor; along with other electrical components and controls. The compressor compresses the gas refrigerant into a liquid and pumps the refrigerant through the outdoor coil releasing heat gained from the inside of the house. The cooled liquid is then piped through the line set to the indoor evaporator coil.
The Physics Happening In Your Indoor Unit
The indoor unit’s fan circulates the inside air across the evaporator coil’s fins. Just before the refrigerant enters the evaporator, the refrigerant, via a thermal expansion valve (TXV), turns from a liquid to a gas. In this process, physics kicks in lowering the temperature of the refrigerant, dropping the temperature of the indoor coil to below dew point. This is critical in our Illinois humidity.
You’ll Feel More Comfortable!
Water vapor within the airflow condenses on the surface of the indoor coil reducing the relative humidity and heat (contained within the water vapor). This creates drier, cooler air providing greater comfort. Dry air gives the sensation of a cooler environment without drastically reducing the air temperature; thus saving you money and providing safer indoor air quality. The evaporator’s metal fins transfer the heat within the air to the refrigerant gas and then outside to the compressor. At the same time, the condensation drips down into a drain pan, through a condensate tube, and empties into your drain.
The Final Step Of Transferring Heat
The refrigerant that has absorbed the heat from within your home flows back to the compressor and compressed back into a liquid, flows through the condenser coil while the condensing fan draws air across the coil to transfer it to the outside. That’s why when you hold your hand over the top of your condensing unit, the air is warm to hot. This process continues until your home reaches the desired temperature you’ve set at your thermostat.
PHYSICS PUT SIMPLY: Air is not cooled. There is not “degree” of cool. Heat is either made or transferred.
Technically, we should be called Brown’s Add Heat and Remove Heat Company, but that sounds silly.
